Q: What is gluten?
A: Gluten is a family of proteins naturally found in certain grains, like wheat, barley, rye, and malt. Oats are often cross-contaminated with wheat in the manufacturing process. Unless labeled “Certified GF Oats,” oats can be considered to also contain gluten. Wheat germ, cous cous, durum, einkorn, farina, faro, graham flour, kamut, matzo, semolina, and spelt also contain gluten.
Q: Is your kitchen dedicated gluten-free?
A: YES! We never cook or bake with gluten or any ingredient at risk of cross-contamination from gluten. We are VERY proud to be able to say that butter + sugar treats are not just gluten-free, but that they are also Celiac-safe.
Q: Are there nuts in your kitchen?
A: Although we don’t use almond flour often in our recipes, there are nuts and tree nuts in our kitchen. I understand the dangers of cross-contamination and take care to avoid cross-contamination with nuts or tree nuts when I am baking, but I cannot guarantee that any butter + sugar products are safe for those with nut or tree nut allergies.
Q: Can your products be made dairy-free or vegan?
A: butter + sugar started as a response to my son’s Celiac diagnosis. I watched as my GF cooking literally healed his body. As I developed the recipes that have become butter + sugar favorites, I was vigilant about excluding gluten, but allowed myself flexibility when it came to everything else— dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. I experimented with recipes to make treats that taste “great,” not to make something “healthy.” In fact, butter + sugar’s GF flour blend actually contains milk powder because I find that it helps replace some of the proteins that are lost when you bake without gluten.
I am open to baking custom orders that use a store-bought GF flour blend that is also DF and to using a non-dairy butter, but I cannot guarantee the final product will have the same taste and texture as my original butter + sugar GF recipe. Please reach out if you would like to discuss DF options further.
Q: How does ordering work?
A: We have three basic kinds of products— Mix ‘n Match items, Special Order items, and By Mail items.
Mix ‘n Match items are tried-and-true butter + sugar customer favorites that we always keep in stock. Select at least $8 worth of items to build your own Mix ‘n Match Sampler Box. Order and pay online for pick-up as early as next day.
Special Order items are also butter + sugar customer favorites, but they are products that take a bit longer to make (think GF Sourdough bread) or need to be sold as a full-batch (GF Maple Glazed Pumpkin Donuts). Special Order items also include any custom cake or cupcake you might dream up. Special Orders require a week’s lead time to prepare, so plan ahead. Because Special Orders are just that— special— we ask that you fill out the Pre-Order Inquiry Form on the product’s page to let us know what you want and when you want it. We will reach out to you within 24 hours to confirm if there is room in our baking schedule to accommodate your order. Payment for Special Orders is due upon receipt of your baked goods.
And, finally, By Mail items are just that— pre-set collections of treats that are available for shipping throughout the continental United States. Boxes ship via UPS Ground on Mondays. You can order and pay for your box online.
Q: Where is pick-up? How does pick-up work?
A: butter + sugar is a Cottage Food Licensed home kitchen, so pick up is from my home in N. Stamford just past the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. When orders are ready for pick-up, they are placed in a butter + sugar Yeti cooler in the driveway.
Orders will be placed in the cooler at the time you specified when you placed your order. I will text you to confirm that your order is ready for pick-up. At this point, you just drive up, grab your order from the cooler, and enjoy!
Q: Do you offer delivery or shipping?
A: YES! Check out the “By Mail” section of our Online Shop to see what is available for shipping. We ship via UPS Ground on Mondays from our hometown of Stamford, CT. Delivery to the Stamford-area is sometimes available. Please contact us if you might need delivery.
